    Prolouge
    or
    Please to make your handstand[/list:you]

One could say... He envied them, those little ones. Those, so unaware of the fate that awaited them. Well... For the most part, anyway. That little princess, she certainly seems to know whats happening. Zelda was her name, or so he'd been told. Hyrules future queen, but He knew she would become much more. She didn't seem much aware of the fate that awaited her, but was more then happy to explain her prophetic dreams to the very boy she dreamt about. And that boy...
Well, the boy was hard pressed to just keep up with what Zelda was saying. What was that boys name, again...? Ah, yes! Link! The old one recalled Kaepora Gaebora telling him earlier.

He, the old one, crept with velvet steps towards the children, intent on helping to illuminate some of the finer points of the quest Link was to be sent on by the Princess. Something was telling him to go to them now, and he was a terrible creature of instinct. He didn't get far before a new feeling stopped him. Someone was coming...? Someone who shouldn't. He quickly turned-tail and hid among the flowerbushes, waiting, watchful for the newcomer. It wouldn't do well for him to reveal himself unnecessarily. This presence felt... wrong. Whoever it was, they were definitely not supposed to be there right then. The old one lay crouched in waiting, watching the pathway through a gap in the foliage, half expecting to see Ganondorf himself go stomping by. Instead, he was rather shocked to see a child pass breifly into his feild of vision, headed quietly for Zeldas personal garden.

He shook his head, disgusted with himself. To be so paranoid that a mere child had sent him, HIM, scurrying into the bushes! He mused on this, pondering if he was perhaps slipping in his old age... Then the old one gave a mighty blink, for large amber eyes were peering up at him through the bush, a little head cocked curiously at him. He could have slapped himself, what a day this was turning into!

Dyne would never let me live it down if he finds out I let a child sneak up on me, he thought, before taking a moment to examine the little girl before him. Girl? It was female, right? A short, boyish crop of hair, rather the color of a ripe bruise, framed a round little face with a darkly tanned complexion.

Said face was pouting curiously at him, but really didn't help his guess at the childs gender. He lowered his head towards her, a furry red muzzle sticking out from the bushes as he gave an experimentary sniff. A sigh slipped out from between his jaws, and he cocked his head her, mirroring her position. It had answered one question, but had raised a whole bunch of new ones! For one thing, he'd thought she was a Gerudo child. But she reaked of the sea! ...Was there even a sea anywhere near Hyrule? The smell was jarring a few obscure memories. It wasn't... All that long ago, actually, that he'd seen the sea...

His breif reverie was made even more breif as something tan drifted into his line of sight, approaching his head. He gave yet another blink of green-gold eyes, as a little hand patted him on the head, rubbing his ears. The girl gave him an impish smile, laying a small, pale blue object at his feet(paws, he corrected), before giggling and racing off for the main gardens.

He gave a glance down, at the vaguely sweet-potato shaped object, pawing it slightly to turn it over and get a better look. A sudden shreik, high-pitched and dismayed, made him jump. He snatched the little object in his mouth, stepping about halfway out of the bush to look around. The body that was revealed was canine with short, thick fur, longer and darker in a ruff down his spine. His pelt, barely a shade off from deep blood red, was glaringly obvious against the dark greens and pastels of Zeldas flower garden. Another cry made him glance to the right, and he caught sight of the young Princess, giving him a shocked look. Link was not far behind her, looking mildly curious, and a fairy(Ah! Navi, of course...) fluttered anxiously beside him.

"AAH! NO! BAD DOG, DROP IT! DROP IT THIS INSTANT!" Zelda shouted, running towards him and shouting for Impa. The old one sighed, producing a faint keen from the Ocarina of Time(for that was surely what it was, for princess to pitch such a fit), before dropping it and racing off. The strides were easy and long, but hurried. He had no desire to deal with an overprotective Sheikah female, and so made good time out of the castle and into the marketplace. He slowed there, walking at a more leisurely pace and slipping around the people nearby. A blur of brighter color against the rather drab town decor caught his eye, and he cocked his head in that direction for a better look. Angled, furry ears swivled forward as his attention shifted, catching bits and peices of a muttered conversation.

It was the girl from earlier, flanked on either side by two Gerudo, and following none other then the future King of Evil himself! The girl turned her head, smiling as she caught sight of the large, furry body of the old one. She giggled into her hand, before raising it and waving enthusiasticly back at him. One of the two Gerudo women tapped her on the head, pointing her in the direction of Ganondorf, who had changed direction and was headed for the stables. She grinned and nodded, racing off after him in a childs attempt to ditch the two red-heads. The second shook her head as the first took off after the girl, walking after them.

He curled his bushey edged tail around his feet as he sat down, and sighed yet again. What a day. Something really didn't feel right... Then, for the second time that day, a sudden noise in his ear made him jump, a muffled yelp escaping him.

"Getting chased off by some prissy little Princess? I think you're slipping in your old age, Triforcer!"

    Chapter 01
    Self Explanitory Exploration[/list:you]

    Theirs was an ancient battle.

No one knew when it had started.

Everyone hoped it would never happen again.

Few knew history was doomed to repeat itself.

He was no more then seventeen years old, and he had been forced to learn these things the hard way. The fast way.

The way that involved the former Fairyless Boy running beneath a monster that had once been a man, desperately cutting upwards in an attempt to hack off its tail. A beastly shreik indicated he had hit his target, and he plowed into the assault. Ribbons of flesh and blood fell away at the holy blades persist, rotting and turning to stone before they even hit the ground. He hadn't made much leeway before the tail whipped out of his reach, snapping back before he could move and sending him flying.

He hit the ground with a sickening crunch, his sword falling from his grasp as he slid to a halt. He lay there a moment, clenching his teeth against the pain in his right arm and fighting the black fog that had begun to sprout up in the corners of his vision.

He wondered breifly if he would die there.

A dismayed cry brought him back.

She was the perfect fairy tale image of a princess, a damsel in distress, with long blonde hair and eyes like jewels. A dress that reached the ground, whites and purples and golds, with high, white gloves. A Fairy was at her side, a perfect sphere of pale blue, with two pairs of fluttering crystal wings. Both were worried, calling out to him.

    Both cared about him.

Both fought at his side, against this great evil.

The hero smiled against the pain, getting to his feet and calmly retrieving his sword.

He sent a prayer to the goddesses, his smile going bitter.

    He made a decision.

If he was going down, he was taking Ganon with him.

    "Link!"

Courage rushed Power, and Wisdom watched in horror.

    "Link, WAKE UP!"
    "GUAAH!"

The green clothed Hero awoke with a jerk and a shout, wincing and shuting his eyes against the bright sun. He groaned slowly as he became aware of the water running down his face, dripping into the grass. He growled a bit, before shooting one hand up and smiling at the resounding slap, followed by a pained but amused grunt.
'Note to self, never snooze by the river. Ever,' he thought, before slowly opening sleepy blue eyes to view who had decided to wake him in such an manner.

His gaze was met with the countenance of a Zora, a purple tinted mark on its cheekily grinning face in the shape of a handprint. Eyes that were more purple then black, and scales more opal then blue, added with that sharp toothed grin, was what made up a Zora Link had become rather familiar with as of late.

And one he was none too happy to see.

    "ZAER!"

Another swat was aimed at Zaer, and he had to throw himself backwards to dodge. The young Zora went under breifly, coming back up some distance from Link and chortling.

"Yeh, 'tis nice t' seh ya too, Link. " he said through his laughter, a pleasant tenor voice with a heavy accent. The Hero of Time had never met a Zora besides Zaer who had an accent like that, but it honestly didn't strike him as odd. Link had always thought he was, perhaps, one of the Ocean Zora he'd heard about, visiting from a distant land. There certainly weren't any oceans in Hyrule, afterall, and Link had only made this particular Zoras aquaintance within the past month. But he was an agreeable sort, and Link found him particularly easy to get along with. It seemed like they'd been friends much longer.

"Did you need something, Zaer? Or is Ruto looking for me again?" Link inquired, rolling over onto his stomach and tilting his head. The Zora's grin, if possible, widened. Link would never openly show scorn of any one person, (Ganon nonwithstanding) but it was well known he had no fondness for Rutos constant desire for his company.

"Naaah. Nuthin' sa... do-mes-teec~ Summat af a mer... quest'onable mattra.", said Zaer, closing his eyes and nodding as he spoke. Link gave him a dull look.

"I find that a bit hard to believe... Last time I listened to your 'questionable matters', I fell down a hole. Straight down into a Mad Scrub den!" Links growl was more playful then truely angry, but Zaer put his hands up in a pacifying motion. The ruffled fins of his arms rippled with iridescence in the sunlight-- Another thing Link had noticed. What Zora had those sort of showy fins, anyway?

"Alors pas, peekon! Ees truth! Dey been sayin' sum funnin' t'ings 'bout da watra as-o-late. Sayin' 'bout t'ings dat appear in da corner af ya eye, den vanishes de mo' ya turn thanks look." His eyes glittered with something Link misinterpreted as mischief; Zaer knew alot of things that no one knew about, and he liked it that way, but he was always good for a helpful hint or a fantastic tale to help the day go by. And this was certainly one of those things.

The young Hero jerked up onto his elbows, expression eager. He loved ghost stories.

"Really, Zaer? C'mon, tell me about it!"
Zaer swam in close, his face scarce inches away from Links as he lowered his voice to a more confidential tone. "Yeh. Dey say eets a Zora, like as not. He been 'pearin' at night, right as rain, spookin' de 'orses as dey cross de bridge to Kakariko, or waterin' down at dis pool." The boys face was eager; Zaer loved nothing more then a captive audience. "N'fact, dey sayin'... Dey sayin' dat he ova a hunner'd yea's old. De story goes dat he an' a gal, his sista, dey come vistin' fra a place fa', fa' way fra hea', righ'? He an' dat gal, dey come fra a place where de wata, she go on an' on wi'out endin'. Da sea, peekon. Where de watra as salty as de cuckoo stew dey make fer da sick chillens a' de Kakariko Vil.

"Dem two, dey come runnin' fra a sickness in dey home, da on'y two who get away fra it. A sickness dat been killin' all dere frien' an' fam, 'till it only dem two left. Dey make it all de way to de Lake a'fore dey stop. Dey sleep, den, a' up in de shalla's, prayin' thanks de Goddesses dat dey 'scape alrigh'. But de gal, she get washed away in de watra. When 'er brotha wake up, she gon'. He so 'fraid she die, he start lookin' fo' 'er. But 'e neva fin' 'er. Dat fella, he love 'er so, dat he die lookin' fo' 'er. An' he still lookin', lookin' hard for de sista he love. De folks up at de Vil t'ink he gon' take de Zora gals if dey swim dis riva. But we know betta, us Zoras. Zora from de Ocean deep, dey look nuthin' like de Zora af de Riva, an' de Zora af de Lake. Or even de Zora af de Ocean shore."

Zaer was quite pleased with the wondering look on Links face; He was more then a captive audience, he was an exceedingly appreciative one. He knew Zaer didn't tell stories, that he told honest truth, but strove to tell it in a way that would touch ones mind as it ought.

Besides which, he would spread the story to those who didn't think there was any worth in stopping for a chat with a Zora. And that was what pleased Zaer most.

"Wow... That's so sad, he died trying to find her... What ever happened to her, do you know?" The zora shook his head, shrugging helplessly.

"Naah, Link. If I did, you t'ink dat Zora still be searchin' fa his sista, frettin' de 'orses an' de chillens af de Vil? I hea' ya can hea' de sista cryin' in de watra, though. Hea' her cryin' an' frettin', screamin' fa her brotha. She lonesome. Dey both ah. Dey say dats wha' do her in, de sista. She die ah 'er lonesome wi'out her brotha." Link wondered at the wistful expression on his friends face, before Zaer suddenly regained his cheeky grin. "'Ey, Link, you de Hero. Maybe you fin' de sista, you bring 'er to de brotha, an' den dey both rest in peace togetha."

The young man laughed, shoving Zaers head breifly under water.

"If he couldn't find her in a hundred years, how would I ever be able to do it?" he muttered, ignoring the shrug and the 'You de Hero, you tell me.' from Zaer. The grass rustled softly as he rolled over to his back once more, arms folded beneath his head as he gazed up at the sky. "It would be nice though, to try... To be able to help someone who was hurting like that..."

Link could be called naive. He could be called ignorant. But he was a caring boy, not yet exposed to mans simple evils of greed and hate. He had only seen terrible qualities in Ganondorf, and his emphatic mind had isolated it as a rare occurance. Something unusual. He had no idea how truly evil the human heart could become... But he did understand certain cruelties in life. A hero, he was. Link, the Great Hero of Time. There were few in the land who would not spare him a smile, a friendly word. Gratitude. But still, he was alone. The Kokiri were family to him... But he was Hylian. An adult. An outsider. In towns he felt alone, though surrounded by his people, his blood... Gratitude, but little true friendship. Link understood what it was to be lonely.

But what was the use in thinking that way? Link was a Hero. He forced it back down again, focusing on a new thought to keep such unsavory feelings at bay. A thought that had honestly just occured to him, inspired by Zaers words. Zora from the Ocean Deep, they look nothing like the Zora of the River, and the Zora of the Lake. Or even the Zora of the Ocean Shore.

"Say, Zaer. Just where are YOU from, anyway? I've never seen a Zora like you, or anyone who talks with that accent--"

Link trailed off. He had turned over as he spoke, thinking Zaer was being awfully quiet, but... Zaer was gone.

The blonde boy was too used to Zaers random appearances and disappearances to give it a thought, shifting a few feet away from the river before laying back down and pulling his hat over his eyes. He wanted to continue that nice nap he was having, and if Zaer wanted to talk again, he'd have to hoist that lazy tail of his OUT of the river this time!

...Link never noticed the storm clouds gathering at Death Mountains peak. Or the pair of gold-green eyes, watching him from afar...

Chapter 2
Thats not how we do things here.

It wasn't long before Link was woken up again. He sighed, giving up on his attempt at a nap to sit up and look around. What was it this time?

"Epona?", he queried. The bay mare was tossing her head anxiously, whuffling and pawing the ground. Link jumped up in alarm as she suddenly reared to her hindlegs, pawing the air and letting out a frightened whinny.

"Epona!" The young hero leapt to his feet, stumbling forward and seizing the frantic mares reigns. "Easy girl, easy!" he cried, pulling her forward to get her down on all fours again. He made hushing sounds while stroking her nose and throat with one hand, the other digging in a saddlebag for a carrot or apple to sooth her with. She wouldn't take the proffered treat, but did start to calm down at his continued pets and reassurances.

"Easy girl, easy, shhh..." he said, making soft clucking sounds with his tongue. "What's the matter girl, what's got you so riled up?" One might find it a little odd, the ease with which he spoke to the young mare, but really, it wasn't unusual for someone who'd had chats with Deku Scrubs as a boy. The sound of hoof-beats finally alerted him to her troubles-- His head jerked up in time to see an enormous black stallion thunder by, startling Epona into rearing again and flinging Link flat down on his back. Several moments of chaos, shouting and the excited cries of several horses, went by before Link managed to right himself and calm Epona down again.

"Ahoy! Ye alright there, mate?", came a concerned female voice. The blonde turned his head-- The large stallion was nearest, it's dark red mane and tail decorated with braids and it's rider leaning forward in interest. Link could only assume she was near his age by her voice, as her body was hidden in a cloak of heavy, blood-red silk. Behind her, three women-- Gerudos? -- waited, also on horseback and wearing rougher, cream colored cloaks with hoods down.

"Err... Yeah, I'm alright. You gave my horse quite a spook though." Link responded, touching his hand to his cap and nodding his head politely. It had taken him a moment to get past her unusual accent. At his reply, the young woman hunched her shoulders, gloved hands fiddling sheepishly with the gold embroidery on her cloak.

"Ehhh, sorry about that... Should'av gave a 'gangway', eh? Kumate here doesn't always like to watch where he's going, ye see..." She patted the horse affectionately on the flank, to which it gave an oddly gentle nicker, giving Link a once-over with unusual red eyes. He gave a weak smile-- That was a Gerudo war-horse, no mistake. They were known for their fierce tempers and loyalty to their riders in battle, as well as vibrant and unusual colors. (Though how the Gerudo people had obtained the latter traits in their beasts was a great mystery to the rest of the world.) The last time Link had seen one, it had been when Ganondorf nearly mowed him down as a child.

Before either could exchange more pleasantries, one of the other women called out--Those three were riding more common Gerudo breeds, Link noticed.-- and raised her arm.

"Oit, Cap'n! Yer old man'll 'ave us dancin' the hempen jig if we're late, ye know tha'!", she cried, and Link blinked. Were these really Gerudo women? He'd never heard such an accent. And what in the world were they talking about? Gangway? Hempen Jig? He could hear "Cap'n"s exasperated sigh as she turned to address the other women.

"Oh, belay that whining. We'll make it in plenty of time, s'not like the Fortress is some Chase. And to ye, stranger, my apologies for givin' yer saucy beauty there a fright, but we'd best be on our way. Fair winds, lad!" With that, she was off, her entourage triangulating behind the black stallion. Link stared after them for a long moment, absently stroking the still-anxious mares nose. What... had just happened? Gerudo women with strange accents, a girl in the traditional cloak of a Gerudo leader, and a familiar looking war-horse...

Link set his jaw and practically leapt into the saddle, sending Epona rocketing off after the group. The hero wore a fierce grin. Something was going on, and he wanted to know what!
    ~[/list:you]

The women continued on, unaware they were being tailed for the time being. They chatted amongst themselves, cheerily discussing their awaited arrival at the Gerudos Fortress, and the scenery; Two of the four were completely new to Hyrule.

"Bli-mey! If I didn't know it fer a fact, I'd swear this was the Talminian plain!", said the one on the right. The one on the left replied.

"Aye, but use yer deadlights! Is that a ranch? I almos' thought Clock Town'd be there!"

"It smells difer'nt, too. I cannae smell the sea at all."

"Nah? Well I can! Ye reek!" the left-most female joked, laughing.

    "Why ye pock-marked little--!"

"Belay that yappin'! Din'cha lasses enjoy the trip here?" came the one at the center, obviously a little older then the two at the sides. They nodded eagerly, and "Cap'n" turned in her saddle to look. She pulled back her hood a bit, a grin visible beneath the shadow of the heavy cloth.

"The place we came through was a ver' special place, lassies. It's called th' "Kokiri Forest", an' it's the only o' it's kind the whole world over. Legend goes tha' if ye get lost inside, ye lose yer soul, an' keep walkin' 'til yer nothin' but bones. A Stalfos." said "Cap'n", and the two side-guards shivered appropriately. The rearmost guard shook her head, laughing.

"Heh, as if ye'd believe in tha' sort o' fairy tale. Let's get a move on, lassies! I wanna get me'self OFF this ol' nag an' get splicin' the mainbrace, if ye catch me drift..." she said with a vicious grin, and the other girls cheered.

    "Ya HOOOO~!"

"Smartly there, ladies! Three sails to the wind!"

They laughed, continuing forward with considerably more enthusiasm. They reached the bridge before long, the sideguards marvelling at the sandstone formations while the eldest chuckled at their antics. All three flirted outrageously with the carpenter group as they passed, making their young captain laugh. The guards welcomed them excitedly as they entered the fortress itself, and all-in-all, it seemed to be a merry occasion.

But that's what had Link so bothered.

He had tailed them all the way into the fortress ( The guards grinning cheekily as she took Epona to the stable for him-- Quite a few fancied him, the only male to come and go as he pleased in their sacred fortress ) and was watching the impromptu party that was beginning to unfold. Who were these women to be welcomed with such excitement? And their leader, to wear a cloak like that. Even Nabooru, Sage of Spirit and current Leader of the Gerudo, didn't wear such a thing.

Link blinked. Come to think of it, where WAS Nabooru? Her characteristic pale pink clothing was no where to be seen in the sea of vibrant silk. Before he could question her absence, someone yanked him aside and into the hideout.

"Hey, Link, perfect timing!" came a smooth voice with a hint of a drawl. The Hero perked up, grinning at the sight of Nabooru's green-clad second-in-command. Aria had been the one to induct him into the Gerudos secretive society in the first place, once he'd trounced the guards and freed the carpenters. Among Gerudo, she was a little different-- Her eyes were the same vibrant green as her clothing, inherited from her Hylian father. (Which wasn't all that uncommon in Gerudo society.) She pulled him into a headlock, knocking his hat off and ruffling his short ponytail affectionately.

"Ow, owww! Aria! Come on, hahah, knock it off!"

She laughed, pushing him away after one last noogie. "Heya, Newbie. Your timing is pretty good-- I need you to do me a favor. And before you say no, aaaall ya gotta do is run down to the archery track for me." she said, holding her hands up in a placating way. Link frowned, trying to pat his hair flat but nodding for her to go on. Aria gestured over her shoulder with a wave to indicate the younger girls busy preparing various foods, then clapped her hands together in front of her grinning mouth.

"I gotta watch over the girls here, but we really need our Number One here to help out. We're gonna have a big party tonight since our Little Lady's here to visit, but her old man kicked the bucket, you know, you were there, so we're gonna distract her and try to keep her spirits up when she finds out. It's gonna be great, we're breakin' out fireworks and everything yanno, and--"

    "Um, Aria?"

    "Um, yeah?"

"Shut up." Link's complete deadpan only made her laugh-- Aria was well known for being overtalkative when excited, despite the responsibility of being second-in-command at the Fortress. She grabbed his hat off the floor, popping it onto her own head and running into the main kitchen before he could protest.

"Just go down to the archery range, she'll be with Neera! Her hair's as pink as a Bunba Bloom, you can't miss her! And I'll be keeping your hat hostage 'till ya get her!"

Link stared after her, opened his mouth to argue, then thought better of it. Instead he started off down the hall, attempting to fix his hair while he took a short cut through the fortress, avoiding the crowd outside. That Aria was something else... All of the Gerudo were, really. For a den of thieves, Link always found it to be a very light-hearted, relaxing place...

He supposed he'd go find Nabooru once things settled down, and maybe find out more about this "Little Lady", as Aria called her, while he was wrestling his hat back from her. Link sighed in a happy way, folding his arms behind his head as he went.

Yeah. That seemed like a good plan for now...

But good plans seldom worked out the way you wanted.
