READ: Bad Ad Banner - Beware Pop Ups!

Postby SiLK on Fri Apr 24, 2009 2:24 pm

I was happily changing the forum's banner this morning, then added two a couple of game threads before heading upstairs to make myself a cup of coffee.

I returned to find three windows open, one of which was blocked in red with my virus scan software cautioning me that it was a known attack site.

Now obviously, I didn't navigate away from the forum, so where did this offensive window come from? From a red ad on the forum!

(I've taken a screen capture to show you, this is not the actual ad)

Now you should have anti pop up software active already on your computer, but if not I really suggest that you make it so.
Our new home is close to completion, but meanwhile, Freeforums still stinks badly. They're clearly not checking the quality and safety of their ads before forcing them on us.

Bottom line: If you get a pop up while on this forum, close it at once! It may ask you "Are You Sure You Wish to Navigate Away from this Page?" to which you should always respond OK!
My advice is to never click on an ad that you see here, I just don't trust them.

Pass it on, please.

Here's an update. Apparently it's not only this ad. I was happily chatting to our own Avenrir, when the website randomly navigated to some awful IQ test site.

I'm going to go reinstate my pop up blocker, and I highly advise you to do the same!
Clearly some jerk's worked out a program that's messing with Freeforums...

I'm going to add to this that any of you who browse using Mozilla Firefox, I reccomend the add-on "AdBlock Plus". It blocks most known advert banners on its own. You can add to its filters if you see any slipping through by right-clicking on them and selecting "Adblock...". Or clicking the 'block' tab that appears above Flash adverts ( actually this works for every flash object you come across, so watch for those tabs when you're browsing. I accidentally blocked a Youtube video once XD )

You can also remove things from the filters if you see it blocking things it shouldn't ( such as advent calender items from neopets if you use it XD Mine blocked all the ones with 'ad' in their file names ).

Of course I always suggest getting anti-spyware software as well, if you haven't already. Spyware and malware are known for projecting adverts onto otherwise innocent pages and can sometimes be the cause of malicious ads in the first place.

AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy are my two top reccomendations. Be sure to run a scan at the very least once a week. More often if possible.

Good tips. For those wondering, you can get firefox ad-ons by going to Tools. It's in the drop down.
